Transit in China Without a Visa

China's visa requirement has one notable exception: the visa-free transit option in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu.

This policy allows for a transit stay without a visa under the following conditions:

• The stay must not exceed 72 or 144 hours.
• Travelers must not leave the transit city during their stay.
• Proof of onward travel must be shown at the time of entry into China, typically with a confirmed ticket for a connecting flight.
• The connecting flight must be to a third country, such as Japan, Korea, Thailand, or Australia; return flights do not qualify for visa-free transit.

This visa-free transit option is available to nationals from 54 countries, including all EU member states, Russia, Ukraine, Iceland, and Switzerland. It also applies to travelers holding passports from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, as well as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
