Purpose: Traveling from China to Hong Kong and/or Macau and back.
State Policy: Hong Kong and Macau belong to the People's Republic of China. However, these two Chinese special administrative regions have different entry requirements compared to mainland China.
Visa Requirements: Traveling from China to Hong Kong is considered an exit from the People's Republic of China. To re-enter the People's Republic as a foreign national, you need at least a double-entry visa for China. This visa allows two entries into the People's Republic of China.
Visa Exemptions: As an EU citizen, you do not need a visa for stays of less than 3 months for private reasons in Hong Kong. This also applies to Macau. Similar regulations exist for citizens of Egypt, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Canada, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Namibia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, and the USA. However, the maximum stay is sometimes limited to 7 or 30 days. For the latest regulations, visit: Hong Kong Visa.
Extended Stays: If you are a UK citizen wishing to stay longer than 3 months, or if you plan to study, intern, or work in Hong Kong or Macau, you will need an appropriate visa. Applications are not submitted to Chinese visa offices but directly to the consulate. The applications are then forwarded to the immigration authorities in Hong Kong. The process is often lengthy, causing many applicants to withdraw and resolve the issue locally in Hong Kong. We are not authorized to answer these questions. Please contact the Chinese consulate or embassy responsible for your region for exact visa formalities.
Chinese Citizens: Chinese nationals can stay in Hong Kong without a visa for up to seven days in transit (if entering Hong Kong from mainland China, a corresponding onward flight ticket must be presented. If arriving in Hong Kong from abroad, departure to mainland China must occur within 7 days). Stays of more than seven days require an entry permit for Chinese nationals.
